A New Chapter

Malinas’s stallion career began a new chapter in 2021 when his first Irish-conceived four-year-olds took to the track. Dark Raven is perhaps the one who impressed most when winning the €100,000 Tattersalls George Mernagh Memorial Sales Bumper by 11 lengths, after which Willie Mullins said, “He’s a lovely horse to look forward to going jumping next year.” The John Mulcahy-bred bay was purchased privately by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede after drawing clear in a Leopardstown bumper on debut.

Gavin Cromwell, meanwhile, appears to have a smart prospect on his hands in Malina Girl, who followed up a bumper win with a 14 length success on hurdle debut.

Malinas’s four and five year olds have also made their presence felt between the flags, with The King Of Ryhope making a winning debut in a 4YO point to point early in the season at Lingstown. In December, Setme Straightmate drew 12 lengths clear in a 4YO Maiden at Boulta and has since joined the David Pipe stable. The Pierce Power-trained Merry Maker also shaped like a useful type when landing a 4YO Maiden at Tipperary in April.

In the 2020/2021 season Malinas added to his already impressive tally of 15 individual Black Type winners when Llandinabo Lad completed back-to-back wins in a Listed Novices’ Hurdle at Haydock, before finishing a fine second under a penalty in the Grade 2 Supreme Trial.

Mighty Thunder proved a revelation over fences last season; winning four of his seven starts; rounding off his campaign with a valuable victory in the Grade 3 Scottish Grand National and giving his trainer Lucinda Russell the confidence to sign for two more of Malinas's progeny at the DBS Store sale in 2021.
