James Garfield’s first yearlings made a bright start at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, where Alex Elliott went to £85,000 for a colt out of Omanome. Demand continued at the Goffs Sportsmans’ Sale, where a James Garfield filly became the most expensive progeny out of Clonbonny Stud’s Vulnicura, when selling to Nigel Tinkler and Jamie Piggott for €45,000.
Longways Stables went to 45,000gns to secure a James Garfield colt consigned by Jamie Railton at Tattersalls. He boasts a proven cross, with his dam having produced Group-placed juvenile Pearl Glory by another son of Exceed And Excel.
DPA Bloodstock joined the buyers’ sheet when giving €36,000 for the James Garfield filly out of Magic Motif; a half-sister to Barsanti who is again in foal to James Garfield.
2021 saw Exceed And Excel strengthen his claims as a sire of sires, with Bungle Inthejungle siring his first Group 1 winner and Cotai Glory making a strong start at stud producing Group 2 Prix Robert Papin victor Atomic Force, just one of his seven individual Stakes performers.
James Garfield was typical of his sire in his precocity and displayed enormous talent from an early stage. He broke the track record when landing the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes, while his performances in defeat include a fine third in the Windsor Castle Stakes on just his second start and beaten a whisker in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes. On his 3-Y-O return in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes, he ended the unbeaten run of Expert Eye the subsequent winner of the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile. Polydream narrowly denied James Garfield Group 1 glory close home in the Prix Maurice de Gheest, in which the leading pair finished two and a half lengths clear of a talented field.
