LIMATO GAINS STAKES WIN NO. 11
LIMATO (Tagula) defied a penalty to take the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket; an 11th Stakes success for the Henry Candy-trained seven-year-old.
Having finished fourth on his seasonal return in the Group 2 Clipper Logistics Stakes in May, he was sent off favourite under Harry Bentley and travelled sweetly behind the leaders for much of the way. Improving into second two furlongs from home, he was ridden to lead approaching the final furlong marker and was driven out to hold off a challenge by Glorious Journey in the closing stages, prevailing by a neck on the line.
A delighted Henry Candy commented after the race, “I haven’t seen LIMATO look as well as that in a long time. I’m very happy with that, he was travelling so easily Harry [Bentley] felt he had to go on. He was idling a bit in front.”
Owned by Paul G Jacobs, Limato was bought by Peter and Ross Doyle as a yearling for £41,000. He was bred by Seamus Phelan and comes from the family of Coral Eclipse victor Compton Admiral and top-class racemare The Fugue.
